The phone rang at 3AM. One of my players was in shock... crying, panicked, and holding his girlfriend after a car accident.

I could hear the sirens.
I could hear the fear in his voice.
I could feel the moment collapsing around him.

That player was @ballnmarley

And by the time they reached the hospital, his girlfriend was gone.

There’s no playbook for that.
No timeout to regroup.
Just heartbreak.

And a young man who lost the person he loved right in front of him.

When he came back to campus, he wasn’t the same.

How could he be?

He wasn’t thinking about basketball.
He was trying to breathe through grief.

So we did the only thing that mattered → 𝐖𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐝 𝐮𝐩.

I put the whole team on a bus and drove to Atlanta for the funeral.

Not as athletes.
As family.

And in the days that followed, we took it slow.

We sat.
We cried.
We talked.
We reminded him he wasn’t alone.

Over time, Jamario found his footing.

He started playing again.

Not just playing → competing.
And that season, he finished strong.

Eventually, he was drafted into the NBA.

But none of that is what I remember most.
What I remember is the heart it took to keep going.

The grit it took to get out of bed.

The love a team showed when life was harder than any game.

That’s what 𝐆𝐈𝐃 really means.

It’s not about pretending to be tough.

It’s about getting through the hardest moments together → one step at a time.

We didn’t just run a program.
We walked through life together.
That’s what real teams do.

The difference between the top 1% and everyone else? They don’t fear failure. They use it.

I’ve seen it over and over.
In the locker room.

I was winning big on the court. Packed arenas. TV games. Banners and rings. But while I was chasing wins at work… I was quietly losing at home.

I’ve never been a CEO. But I’ve stood in front of a locker room after a crushing loss and found a way to reignite belief.

Twelve young men.
Stunned by defeat.

People remember the wins.

The Elite Eight run.
They remember the NCAA tournaments.
The time we were ranked No. 1 in the country.

But behind those moments were tough seasons.

Close games that slipped away.
Nights I replayed every decision in my head.

327 times, I walked off the court with a loss.

Some were on national TV.

Some happened in silence, with nobody watching.

But all of them helped shape who I am.

They taught me how to lead through adversity.

How to take responsibility.
How to stay grounded in my faith.

Because the losses, the ones nobody posts about...

Those are where your character is built.

I don’t coach because I love winning.
I coach because I love growth.

And sometimes, growth comes through pain.

Those 327 losses didn’t break me.
They built me.

If you're in a season of loss or uncertainty, here’s what I’ve told every team I’ve ever led:
