“𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬.” That’s what Marcus Dupree told me when we sat down to talk about growing up in Mississippi.

We talked about football.
We talked about pressure.

But we also talked about racism, and how it shaped his early life.

Marcus told me he knew it was there.
He heard it in whispers.
He felt it in moments.

But his mom and grandparents kept him focused.

Grounded.
Driven.

He told me about going to work with his grandfather as a kid.

“Well, for one, I liked the way Coach Switzer bragged on TV. Back then, there were only a few channels showing games—and we always got Oklahoma. I loved how he’d say, ‘You better watch out—we’ll put half a hundred on you before halftime.’ I liked the wagon. I visited, hung with the guys, and it just felt like home. And they ran the wishbone—just like we did in high school. It was perfect.”

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧 𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝟕 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬?

In this week’s episode, I sat down with Coach Jim Larrañaga → the man who did just that at George Mason.

When Coach Larrañaga interviewed for the job, the program had just finished its seventh consecutive losing season and placed last in the conference four straight years.

Most coaches would have seen a dead end.
He saw a challenge.

Because leadership isn’t about taking over a winning team.

It’s about building belief where there wasn’t any before.

Coach Larrañaga said it best:

"I was sold this was the place, by the president of the university himself."

That belief?
It became contagious.

And George Mason went from the basement to the Final Four.

Great coaches don’t just inherit programs.

Next to a player’s parents.

The phone rang at 3AM. One of my players was in shock... crying, panicked, and holding his girlfriend after a car accident.

I could hear the sirens.
I could hear the fear in his voice.
I could feel the moment collapsing around him.

That player was @ballnmarley

And by the time they reached the hospital, his girlfriend was gone.

There’s no playbook for that.
No timeout to regroup.
Just heartbreak.

And a young man who lost the person he loved right in front of him.

When he came back to campus, he wasn’t the same.

How could he be?

He wasn’t thinking about basketball.
He was trying to breathe through grief.

So we did the only thing that mattered → 𝐖𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐝 𝐮𝐩.

I put the whole team on a bus and drove to Atlanta for the funeral.

Not as athletes.
As family.

And in the days that followed, we took it slow.

We sat.
We cried.
We talked.
We reminded him he wasn’t alone.

Over time, Jamario found his footing.

He started playing again.

Not just playing → competing.
And that season, he finished strong.

Eventually, he was drafted into the NBA.

But none of that is what I remember most.
What I remember is the heart it took to keep going.

The grit it took to get out of bed.

The love a team showed when life was harder than any game.

That’s what 𝐆𝐈𝐃 really means.

It’s not about pretending to be tough.

It’s about getting through the hardest moments together → one step at a time.

We didn’t just run a program.
We walked through life together.
That’s what real teams do.

The difference between the top 1% and everyone else? They don’t fear failure. They use it.

I’ve seen it over and over.
In the locker room.
On the court.
In life.

93% of people never take their shot.
6% take one, miss, and walk away.
But the top 1%?

They keep shooting. Keep missing. Keep learning.

And eventually, they hit the shot that changes everything.

That’s what 𝐆𝐈𝐃 is all about:

𝐆𝐫𝐢𝐭 → to push through the misses.

𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 → to stay grounded under pressure.

𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐫𝐞 → to keep firing when others fold.

This isn’t theory.
This is life.

It’s how we made a Sweet Sixteen run when nobody believed in us.

It’s how I rebuilt my purpose after my coaching career ended.

You don’t win by avoiding failure.

You win by getting back up with more purpose than before.

I sat down with Coach @kalendeboer to talk about what we really look for when building a winning program.
